Rules or Patterns?

The task

Ten systems are listed below. For each one, decide how it most likely works.

Put it in Someone wrote the rules if a person could sit down and write the conditions out in advance, and the machine would then follow them exactly, forever.

Put it in It learned from examples if no realistic list of conditions would work, and the only way to build it is to show a machine thousands of labeled cases.

Put it in Both, working together if a written rulebook and a trained model are clearly both involved, each doing the part the other is bad at.

The test to apply: could you write the rules yourself, on paper, in an afternoon? If yes, it is a rules system. If the task is easy for you to do and impossible for you to write down, it is learned. If part of it is a fixed number somebody chose and part of it is a judgment call, it is both.

You need 7 out of 10 to pass.
